Mahindra to launch new Scorpio

mahindra which tops the headlines with the launch of Xylo is heading another big launch. When a reporter quipped Mr.Pawan Goenka, President Automotive Sector, Mahindra and Mahindra, Will Mahindra phase out scorpio as the machine flying around for almost 7 years, He replied why should we? when scorpio sales are still going strong.

Mahindra which launched the scorpio in 2002 has constantly upgraded the product to make it contemporary. In 2006, Mahindra added plush seats and rear centre arm rest and dual tone exterior colour. In 2007, Mahindra fitted advanced m_Hawk engine under the hood of scorpio. In 2008, Scorpio got automatic transmission. Mahindra also launched cheaper M2DI variant of scorpio to cater to the needs of rural customer and expand the product’s reach. We are happy to inform you, Scorpio is due for a facelift again in 2009. The all new scorpio will get styling changes both inside and outside the car. Oval shapes will be replace by razor sharp edges. The new scorpio will have a completely different front profile. A new bumper and a headlamp will give a refreshed appeal to the car. New stickers on the body panels will tell you this is a new scorpio. Mahindra is also said to be further fine tuned the suspension of scorpio for better handling chracteristics. Regarding the powertrain, the 2.6L CRDe will be phased out and the superior m_Hawk engine will replace it. Currently the m_hawk contributes for 40% sales of scorpio. The new facelifted scorpio will replace all the existing variants of scorpio - from M2DI to top end m_hawk Automatic variant. Though we expect a marginal increase in prices for the new scorpio, reliable sources tells us there will not be any price change. Also, we learnt that the new scorpio is ready to hit the market as early as March 2009 but we have to wait when Mahindra takes a call.

MAHINDRA UTILITY VEHICLES

MAHINDRA UTILITY VEHICLES

UVs from Mahindra stables to get smaller engines

MAHINDRA UTILITY VEHICLES

Utility vehicles from Mahindra and Mahindra will soon have smaller engines. The company is said to be developing an engine with a capacity ranging between 650cc and 750cc.

Which utility vehicle of Mahindra can actually run with such a small engine? We have no idea. Maybe there is a communication problem here - maybe they meant some new upcoming UV versions? or mini UVs?

With the market getting hotter with the Mahindra’s exclusive truck with French major Renault to sell Logan, the new move might help add more charm to the utility vehicles marketplace. The company’s small engine for a smaller version of its UVs, which may be seen as a bid to replicate the Tatas small car venture, industry reports added. The Tata Nano is already making a variety of companies plan for smaller cheaper versions to bag a share of the market.

One of Mahindras’ vehicles, the Bolero, powered by 2.5 litre engine, is priced at Rs 5.28 lakh. The utility vehicle is among the largest selling vehicles in rural India. Mahindra Logan, a mid-sized sedan, is powered by 1.4 litre petrol engine which is imported from France.

The Indian auto giant has also said that it has bought out the Italy-based engineering and design firm, Engine Engineering Srl. The deal which has been effected for an undisclosed amount, will help the auto maker deploy Italian technology and expertise in making small, yet fuel-efficient engines, suitable for small vehicles.

The acquisition is also seen as helping the Mahindras in creating designs for high-end motorcycles. The Italian major has proficiency in optimising fuel economy from a small engine – the size of about 700cc. The Mahindras’ vehicles would sport these engines, it is expected. The fact that Engine Engineering Srl has been developing engines for superbikes such as Ducati could spur the Indian major to capitalise on this expertise for its range of vehicles.

The company has also said that following the Italian major’s buyout, its own components, engineering services and design arm M&M Systech has a chance to boost its engineering services business along with better access to market, technology and management skills.

Mahindra takes a Green Route to U.S.

Mahindra takes a Green Route to U.S.

The Automobile world is stormed by the “GREEN REVOLUTION”(as the IAB calls it!) these days, and guess whose the new kid on the block? - Mahindra & Mahindra.

Having tasted success in the tractor sector of the U.S market, M&M is cashing in on the growing fad for Green vehicles. M&M is the SUV market leader in India and U.S is the world’s largest pick-up truck market and a prominent market for SUVs. With over 8 years of continuous leadership in the SUV segment, M&M hopes to use the same formula for its sales in U.S starting 2009.

“We are planning to launch our fuel-efficient SUVs in the United States but we are not ready yet to share the exact date of launch,” Mahindra Group Vice-Chairman Anand Mahindra said.”We have made remarkable progress in meeting emission requirements (in the US). We will have targets about the fuel-efficiency in the US market with concepts like hybrids,” says Anand Mahindra, managing director, M&M. The reason behind M&M opting out of the race to acquire Hummer from owners General Motors, according to Mahindra, was its image of fuel guzzler.

“M&M has been consciously working on fuel-efficiency and environmental safety aspects even before the company planned its foray into the US market. Americans are not against large vehicles but are increasingly averse to fuel guzzlers that are not eco-friendly. They want fuel efficiency so that they can be guilt-free of not polluting the environment”, Mahindra said.

For India, the company is ready to launch its bio-diesel vehicles, diesel-electric hybrids and other green vehicles such as the Bolero micro-hybrid, but is waiting for the government to commercialise bio-fuels and provide support to green technology. Mahindra said that it is not true to say that diesel vehicles cause pollution, but it is the quality of fuel used that is critical.
